Summary
Angus King was born in 1944 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Maine. Senator King was reelected in 2018 and his seat will be up for election in 2024.
A political independent since 1993, King won the 2012 Senate election. King was the 72nd Governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003. For committee assignment purposes, King caucuses with the Democratic Party. He is one of the two independents currently serving in the Senate.
Senator King is currently serving on the Armed Services Committee; the Select Committee on Intelligence; the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources; and the Committee on Rules and Administration.
Below is Senator King’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.
Senator King supported the Iran nuclear deal by arguing that, if effectively implemented, the deal served the United States, the Middle East region, and the world. He has supported legislation that objects the UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity.
Senator King is a supporter of the two-state solution. He cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel. In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
In July 2019, Senator King cosponsored a resolution that opposes the delegitimization of Israel and the global BDS movement.
