Summary
Brian Schatz, who is Jewish, was born in 1972 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from Hawaii. Senator Schatz’s seat is up for election in 2028.
Schatz was appointed in the U.S. Senate in 2012 to fill the seat of the late Senator Daniel Inouye. Prior to that, he served as the Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii from 2010 until 2012. Senator Schatz also serves as Democratic Chief Deputy Whip.
Senator Schatz is currently serving on the Appropriations Committee; the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; the Indian Affairs Committee; and the Select Committee on Ethics. At the same time, he is also the Chair of the Senate Democratic Special Committee on the Climate Crisis.

Senator Schatz supported the Iran nuclear deal and was opposed to moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. He has spoken out against anti-Semitism and about the need to counter it. He has said that he opposes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
In 2019, he voted against the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
