Gary Peters

Gary Peters was born in 1958 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Michigan. Senator Peters’ seat is up for election in 2026.

Before being elected to Congress, Peters served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and worked in the private sector. After serving in the Michigan Senate from 1995 until 2002, he was appointed Commissioner of the Michigan Lottery. In 2008 he resigned and ran a successful campaign to represent Michigan’s 9th Congressional District. In 2014 he was elected to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate.

Senator Peters is currently serving as the Ranking Member on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Armed Services Committee; the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee; and the Joint Economic Committee.

Below is Senator Peters’ voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.

Senator Peters supported the Iran nuclear deal, arguing that “despite serious concerns with the agreement, we are faced with no viable alternative.”

Senator Peters supports the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He cosponsored a Senate resolution that objected the UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity.

Senator Peters opposes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act of 2017, two bills that aimed to fight discriminatory boycotts that target Israel.

Senator Peters cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act of 2018, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.

In 2019, he voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
