John Hoeven

John Hoeven was born in 1957 and is currently serving as the senior United States Senator from North Dakota. Senator Hoeven’s seat will be up for election in 2028.

Hoeven was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and was reelected in 2016. Prior to joining the Senate, Hoeven served as the Governor of North Dakota from 2000 until 2010. Prior to entering politics, Hoeven was a successful banker, holding numerous executive roles, most notably as President of the Bank of North Dakota, the nation’s only state-owned bank, from 1993 to 2000.

Senator Hoeven is currently the Chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee. He also serves on the Appropriations Committee; the Energy and Natural Resources Committee; and the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee.

Below is Senator Hoeven’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.

Senator Hoeven opposed the Iran nuclear deal. He opposed UN Security Council Resolution 2334 that claimed that Israel’s settlements have no legal validity. Senator Hoeven opposes the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act and the Combating BDS Act, two bills that aim to fight discriminatory boycotts of Israel.

In 2019, Senator Hoeven voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things, strengthened Israel’s security and allowed a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel.
