Tina Smith

Christine Smith was born in 1958 and is currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Minnesota. Senator Smith was elected in 2018 and her seat will be up for election in 2024.

Smith was appointed to serve as U.S. Senator for Minnesota following  Al Franken’s resignation. Prior to that she worked as Chief of Staff to Governor Mark Dayton and as Lieutenant Governor from 2015 until 2018.

Senator Smith is currently serving on the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee; the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee; the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee; and the Committee on Indian Affairs.

Below is Senator Smith’s voting record and public positions on issues important to the Jewish community.

Senator Smith supported the Iran nuclear deal and urged President Trump to reconsider his decision to abandon the deal. In 2018, she cosponsored the United States-Israel Security Assistance Authorization Act, a legislation that supported full funding of security assistance to Israel as outlined in the 2016 U.S.-Israel Memorandum of Understanding.

In 2019, Senator Smith voted for the Strengthening America’s Middle East Security Act which, among other things strengthens Israel’s security, and allows a state or local government to adopt measures to divest its assets from entities that boycott Israel. She has cosponsored a resolution that opposes efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel and the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that targets Israel.

Senator Smith is a cosponsor of Senate Resolution 234 – introduced in Congress on June 5th, 2019 – which reaffirms the commitment of the U.S. to the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and argues that Israeli annexation of territory in the West Bank would undermine peace and Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state.
